If I buy a costume, say the Balthazar one, and equip it... then I cast avatar of Grenth or whatnot... will my appearance (balthazar from the costume) be replaced by Grenth (from the avatar)?

As long as the avatar skill is active, yes, you'll appear as the avatar.

Well, this seems rather easy to test by yourself in-game, no?

Anyway, the Avatar skills always over-ride anything else, including costumes.

I don't think the OP owns the balthazar costume
